Information Exchange Networks in Low-Income Neighborhoods: Implications for Community Networking.
Bishop, Ann Peterson; Shoemaker, Susan; Tidline, Tonyia J.; Salela, Pamela
Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, v36 p443-49 1999
The Community Networking Initiative (CNI) seeks to increase participation of low-income, primarily African American, residents in a local community computer network. Examination of information exchange practices of CNI indicated that word-of-mouth exchanges with people in one's close social circle and contacts with community organizations appear to be the most important mechanisms for accessing and exchanging information about community activities and resources.
