Nonverbal Cues and Interpersonal Judgments: Participant and Observer Perceptions of Intimacy, Dominance, Composure, and Formality.
Burgoon, Judee K.; Le Poire, Beth A.
Communication Monographs, v66 n2 p105-24 Jun 1999
Examines the impact of nonverbal cues on participants' and observers' perceptions of relational messages in an experiment in which participants interacted with a confederate who systematically varied his or her communication style. Finds that nonverbal indicators of involvement and pleasantness were systematically related to relational message perception of intimacy, dominance, composure, and informality. Supports a social-meaning model of nonverbal interpretation. (SC)
