Not All Imagery Is Created Equal: The Role of Imagery in the Comprehension of Main Ideas in Exposition.
McCallum, Richard D.; Moore, Stephen
Reading Psychology, v20 n1 p21-60 Jan-Mar 1999
Examines relationship between reported imagery and comprehension of main ideas in exposition. Finds that constrained imagery was positively associated with the comprehension of main ideas and followed a similar pattern of growth, and nonconstrained imagery was associated with comprehension failure. Suggests imagery and comprehension were related to subjects' background knowledge. Concludes that imagery is not a precondition for comprehension. (RS)
