Effect of Maltreatment on Preschoolers' Narrative Representations of Responses to Relieve Distress and of Role Reversal.
Macfie, Jenny; And Others
Developmental Psychology, v35 n2 p460-65 Mar 1999
Compared narrative representations from low SES maltreated and nonmaltreated preschoolers. Found that maltreated preschoolers portrayed parents and children as responding less often than did nonmaltreated preschoolers, yet portrayed themselves as stepping into the story more often to relieve children's distress. Abused children portrayed the most participant responses, and neglected children the fewest. Role reversal was associated with physical abuse. (KB)
