Survey of 90 participants in a residential summer school and interviews with 13 aged 62-90 revealed diverse life experiences that correlated with multiple meanings and motivations for educational activity. Low participation of the elderly was associated with early negative experiences. Educational outcomes for older adults did not lend themselves to conventional assessment. (SK)
