The Sociolinguistic Gender Pattern in French: A Comparison of Two Linguistic Levels.
Armstrong, Nigel
Journal of French Language Studies, v8 n2 p139-58 Sep 1998
Analysis of French spoken by French girls aged 11-12 years found that, unlike older counterparts, theirs shows variable linguistic behavior on the phonological level that suggests avoidance of vernacular forms, the "sociolinguistic gender pattern." However, one speaker's discourse shows manipulation of conversational tone comparable to adult competence. The variation in communicative competence is attributed to the social functions that variation fulfills. Author/MSE)
