Growing or Just Getting Along? Technical and Adaptive Competence in Coping among Adolescents.
Fournet, Denise L.; Wilson, Kenneth L.; Wallander, Jan L.
Child Development, v69 n4 p1129-44 Aug 1998
Examined technical and adaptive competence in coping among 97 African-American adolescents with learning disabilities. Findings indicated that short-term, reactive, technical competence was a better predictor of feelings of efficacy, and longer-term, developmental adaptive competence was a better predictor of behavioral problems. Gender subsample differences were significant and supported a picture of gender-typed approaches to coping. (Author)
