Horizontal Qualities in Parent-Child Relationships: Parallels with and Possible Consequences for Children's Peer Relationships.
Russell, Alan; Pettit, Gregory S.; Mize, Jacquelyn
Developmental Review, v18 n3 p313-52 Sep 1998
Examines the possibility that parent-child relationships contain horizontal qualities paralleling comparable qualities in child-peer relationships. Argues that these qualities allow children to experience and practice horizontal skills later used with peers. Focuses on reciprocity and shared power, especially in parent-child play and control exchanges. Discusses developmental changes in the extent, nature, and role of horizontal qualities in parent-child relationships. (Author/KB)
