Secondary School, Family, and Educational Risk: Comparing American Indian Adolescents and Their Peers.
Machamer, Ann Marie; Gruber, Enid
Journal of Educational Research, v91 n6 p357-69 Jul-Aug 1998
Investigated 6000 predominantly American-Indian adolescents' self-reported family connectedness, educational commitment, and risk-taking behavior. Surveys indicated that low family connectedness related to decreased educational commitment and increased risk of absenteeism, substance use, and purchase of substances on campus. American Indian students had lower family connectedness levels, poorer educational performances, and more risk-taking behaviors than non-Indian peers. (SM)
