Language Barriers: Teaching ESL in the Corrections System.
Richiusa, Gordon
American Language Review, v1 n5 p8-10 Nov-Dec 1997
Growing numbers of students of English as a Second Language are learning while in prison, for a variety of reasons: for rehabilitation; to gain privileges; to attain citizenship. Teachers who work in that difficult environment are dealing with widely varying language backgrounds, limited equipment and facilities, specialized language needs, security, and, sometimes, student appreciation.
