Constructing Autonomous Selves Through Narrative Practices: A Comparative Study of Working-Class and Middle-Class Families.
Wiley, Angela R.; Rose, Amanda J.; Burger, Lisa K.; Miller, Peggy J.
Child Development, v69 n3 p833-47 Jun 1998
Examined personal storytelling of European-American preschoolers from working- or middle-class families as a medium through which they construct autonomous selves. Found that children in both communities had extensive rights to speak of past experiences and limited rights to author experiences. Middle-class communities viewed expressing one's view as a natural right; working-class communities viewed it as something to be earned. (Author/KB)
