Rules or Associations in the Acquisition of Morphology? The Frequency by Regularity Interaction in Human and PDP Learning of Morphosyntax.
Ellis, Nick C.; Schmidt, Richard
Language and Cognitive Processes, v13 n2-3 p307-36 Apr-Jul 1998
Presents model describing adult learning of morphosyntax in a novel language where frequency and regularity are factorially combined. Accuracy and latency data show frequency effects for both regular/irregular forms early in acquisition process; as learning progresses, frequency effect on regular items diminishes but remains for irregular items. Performance of a simple connectionist system shows close correspondence to human acquisition data. (Author/MSE)
