Young Children's Difficulty Acknowledging False Belief: Realism and Deception.
Saltmarsh, Rebecca; Mitchell, Peter
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v69 n1 p3-21 Apr 1998
Investigated what makes young children acknowledge a false belief held by another person. Showed movies in which a stereotypical item in a familiar box was replaced by one character with an atypical item. Found highly significant improvement in preschoolers' acknowledgment of second character's false belief when preschoolers saw stereotypical object beforehand; object-replacing character's demeanor (neutral versus deceptive) was irrelevant.
