Racism Stress Management: Racial Socialization Beliefs and the Experience of Depression and Anger in African American Youth.
Stevenson, Howard C.; Reed, Jocelyn; Bodison, Preston; Bishop, Angela
Youth & Society, v29 n2 p172-222 Dec 1997
Studied the relationship between racial socialization and racial identity attitudes in 287 low-income inner-city African American adolescents. Results suggest that beliefs in various types of racial socialization differentially contribute to positive psychological outcomes for adolescents. Gender differences are discussed, and a cultural ecological framework is used to discuss the resilience and risk of anger expression. (SLD)
