Shades of Meaning: Skin Tone, Racial Attitudes, and Constructive Memory in African American Children.
Averhart, Cara J.; Bigler, Rebecca S.
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v67 n3 p363-88 Dec 1997
Examined the effects of negative majority-culture stereotypes of race on elementary school-age African American children's intraracial attitudes. Found that children showed better memory for stereotypic than counterstereotypic information about skin tone. Individual differences in this memory bias varied according to the children's endorsement of negative majority-culture views of African Americans and self-ratings of skin color. (Author/KB)
