The Development and Current Status of Market Mechanisms in United States Postsecondary Education.
Slaughter, Sheila A.; Leslie, Larry L.
Higher Education Policy, v10 n3-4 p239-52 Sep-Dec 1997
Market forces have been powerful in United States higher education throughout history. Public university revenue shares from state governments have declined, destabilizing institutions. Universities have compensated by increasing shares from grant and contracting organizations, resulting in a de-emphasis on instruction and increased emphasis on research and administration, redistribution of institutional power, loss of community, and higher student costs.
