In 1996 the California State University system implemented a new classification and compensation structure for its information technology professionals. Development of the project, which affected over 1,000 union employees, took five years. The job design model used had two key features, flexibility and skill development. This process, the compensation structure, union negotiations, and lessons learned are described. (Author/MSE)
