Cultural Norms Affect Oral Communication in the Classroom.
Johnson, Ellen
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n70 p47-52 Sum 1997
Students from different cultures follow differing norms for communication, affecting the classroom and students' grades. Such patterns are found in class discussions, question-and-answer sessions, small-group interactions (issues include cooperation, structure, competition, and gender), and formal class presentations. While no single teaching strategy can address all cultural styles, knowledgeable and sympathetic teachers can engage students in learning. (Author/MSE)
