Subtypes of Social Withdrawal in Early Childhood: Sociometric Status and Social-Cognitive Differences across Four Years.
Harrist, Amanda W.; And Others
Child Development, v68 n2 p278-94 Apr 1997
Followed 150 children over four years who were classified according to cluster analysis of teacher ratings into four types of social withdrawal: unsociable, passive-anxious, active-isolate, and sad-depressed. Found that unsociable children had elevated sociometric neglect rates, active-isolates had higher levels of rejection, and sad-depressed had elevated neglect and rejection rates; active-isolate children had the least competent social information-processing patterns.
