Indicators of Economic Status and Social Capital in South African Townships: What Do They Reveal about the Material and Social Conditions in Families of Poor Children?
Barbarin, Oscar A.; Khomo, Ngokoana
Childhood: A Global Journal of Child Research, v4 n2 p193-222 May 1997
Employed a method for assessing material well-being and social resources using a set of observable indicators such as adequacy of food, quality of housing, financial assets, consumer goods, and social resources. Identified two dimensions, consumption and social/financial capital, which when used to assign SES were predictive of a family's ability to meet basic needs and its experience of material hardship.
