Cultural Values and Education in Western Samoa: Tensions between Colonial Roots and Influences and Contemporary Indigenous Needs.
Tavana, Gaugau Va'Afuti
International Journal of Educational Reform, v6 n1 p11-19 Jan 1997
As this case study shows, Western Samoa's Western-based educational system caters to a small minority of students' higher education interests and fails to prepare non-college-bound students to survive in their own culture. Educational philosophy and practice should be consistent with core Samoan cultural values, which center on respect, interdependence, cooperation, caring, and social productivity. Other recommendations are summarized. (20 references) (MLH)
