Analyzed videotaped interviews with 18 client systems attending marital or family therapy. Patients reported the importance of a hierarchical relationship between the therapist and the client. Clients were frustrated when therapists did not seem in control of the therapy's direction. Implications for both counselor training and effectiveness are examined. (RJM)
