Arguing that provenance-based retrieval tools do not provide access to "hidden groups" (blacks, women, ethnic and cultural minorities, aboriginal, poor, and working people), this article examines ways to improve traditional descriptive tools. Concludes that archivists need to expand subject access to include function/occupation and type of material, and descriptive tools need to be formalized and codified. (PEN)
