Theories of "Play": Are They Ethnocentric or Inclusive?
Fleer, Marilyn
Australian Journal of Early Childhood, v21 n4 p12-17 Nov 1996
Examines paradigm shifts in the conceptualization of representational play, and implications for children's learning. Argues that children's play is culturally defined, valued, and interpreted and therefore, theories of play should be culturally specific. Advocates ethnographic research to avoid deficit models for non-Western children, and more current research to consider the impact of information technology and other experiences on play. (KDFB)
