Monotonic Syntactic Processing: A Cross-Linguistic Study of Attachment and Reanalysis.
Sturt, Patrick; Crocker, Matthew W.
Language and Cognitive Processes, v11 n5 p449-94 Oct 1996
Demonstrates how the definition of "simple attachment" and "tree lowering," operations related to the grammatical composition operations of "substitution" and "adjunction" in the Tree Adjoining Grammar formalism, yields a parser more constrained than previous description theory based models. The article shows that reanalysis preferences may differ between head-final and head-initial languages. (55 references) (Author/CK)
