Reliance on Visual and Verbal Information across Ontological Kinds: What Do Children Know about Animals and Machines?
Freeman, Karen E.; Sera, Maria D.
Cognitive Development, v11 n3 p315-41 Jul-Sep 1996
Two experiments examined preschoolers' and adults' relative reliance on visual and verbal information in identification of animals and machines. Findings include both children and adults can use either visual or verbal cues in categorization, and a stricter definition is used in identifying animals. Results suggest that a perceptual to conceptual shift oversimplifies the reality of human categorization. (EV)
