A Process Model for Understanding Adaptation to Sexual Abuse: The Role of Shame in Defining Stigmatization.
Feiring, Candice; And Others
Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, v20 n8 p767-82 Aug 1996
This article presents a theoretical and testable model of psychological processes in child and adolescent victims of sexual abuse. It proposes that sexual abuse leads to shame through mediation of cognitive attributions which leads to poor adjustment. Three factors--social support, gender, and developmental period--are hypothesized to moderate the stigmatization process. Research supporting the model is reviewed. (Author/DB)
