The Association between Language and Symbolic Play at Two Years: Evidence from Deaf Toddlers.
Spencer, Patricia Elizabeth
Child Development, v67 n3 p867-76 Jun 1996
Investigated associations between expressive language and symbolic play in deaf children with deaf parents or with hearing parents, and hearing children with hearing parents. Defined three language level groups. Hearing status was associated with duration of symbolic play. Higher language levels were associated with more canonically sequenced and preplanned play, even when language delays were due to exogenous factors. (HTH)
