The Use of Evidence in Presidential Debates: A Study of Evidence Levels and Types from 1960 to 1988.
Levasseur, David; Dean, Kevin W.
Argumentation and Advocacy, v32 n3 p129-42 Win 1996
Examines whether presidential candidates who use informational briefing books when preparing for debates actually improve their debating effectiveness. Finds that higher rates of factual evidence are associated with "losing" a debate. Argues that this association arises from three common mistakes candidates make when using evidence. Offers John Fitzgerald Kennedy's argumentation method as a model for political success. (PA)
