Strategies Deaf Mothers Use When Reading to Their Young Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children.
Lartz, Maribeth Nelson; Lestina, L. Jill
American Annals of the Deaf, v140 n4 p358-62 Oct 1995
Six deaf mothers were videotaped while reading a book to their deaf or hard-of-hearing children (ages three to five). Analysis revealed six strategies used by mothers, including sign placement, text paired with signed demonstration, real world connection between text and child's experience, attention maintenance, physical demonstrations of character changes, and nonmanual signals as questions.
