Reactions to Anglo- and Hispanic-American-Accented Speakers: Affect, Identity, Persuasion, and the English-Only Controversy.
Giles, Howard; And Others
Language & Communication, v15 n2 p107-20 Apr 1995
Examined the reactions of 83 Anglo-American undergraduates to Anglo- and Hispanic-American-accented speakers supporting or opposing the English-only movement in California. Results found that respondents were happier when the Anglo source argued against rather than for English exclusivity, and that respondents' happiness was not affected by hearing either message from the Latino source.
