The Role of Letter Names in Children's Learning of Phoneme-Grapheme Relations.
Treiman, Rebecca; And Others
Applied Psycholinguistics, v15 n1 p97-122 Mar 1994

Findings suggest that children use their knowledge of letter names and their phonological segmentation skills rather than memorizing these links in a rote, paired-associate manner.
