The Apprenticeship Approach to Advanced Academic Literacy: Graduate Students and Their Mentors.
Belcher, Diane
English for Specific Purposes, v13 n1 p23-34 1994
From the perspective of legitimate peripheral participation, a theory that equates learning with increasingly greater involvement in a sociocultural community, this paper examines the role that graduate student/advisor relationships play in nonnative speaker dissertation writers' participation in their research communities. Focus is on three fields: Chinese literature, applied mathematics, and human nutrition. (Contains 24 references.) (Author/LB)
