The Problem of Metaphorical Nonequivalence in Cross-Cultural Survey Research: Comparing the Mental Health Statuses of Hmong Refugee and General Population Adolescents.
Dunnigan, Timothy; And Others
Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, v24 n3 p344-65 Sep 1993
Examines methodological problems that metaphorical nonequivalence poses for cross-cultural survey research. Data from 1,105 urban ninth graders (including 105 Laotian Hmong) in St. Paul (Minnesota) illustrate problems of the translation of psychological instruments and the difficulties of administering a single instrument to culturally different populations. Metaphorical nonequivalence significantly affected Hmong student responses. (SLD)
