Effects of Contingent and Noncontingent Maternal Stimulation on the Vocal Behaviour of Three- to Four-Month-Old Japanese Infants.
Masataka, Nobuo
Journal of Child Language, v20 n2 p303-12 Jun 1993
Forty-eight male infants (tested at ages three and four months) experienced either conversational turn-taking or random responsiveness of their mothers. Contingency did not affect the infant's rate of vocalizing but influenced its quality and timing. Intervals at which mother delivered contingent responses were longer when infant was older. Results underline sensitivity of mother-infant communication system to infant maturation. (Author/JP)
