Examining the Well-Being of Nonclinical College Students: Is Knowledge of the Presence of Parental Alcoholism Useful?
Wright, Deborah M.; Heppner, P. Paul
Journal of Counseling Psychology, v40 n3 p324-34 Jul 1993
Examined relationship of parental alcoholism and family functioning to problem-solving appraisal, social support, interpersonal cognitive schema, and substance use among 40 adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and 40 non-ACOAs. Participants from dysfunctional families reported more negative problem-solving appraisal and interpersonal cognitive schemata than participants from functional families. Psychological adjustment appears multidetermined, not simple consequence of parental alcoholism. (Author/NB)
