A survey of 90 undergraduate and graduate social work students investigated their interest, perceived competence, and perceived training needs in working with persons with serious mental illness. Almost half expressed interest, corresponding to student experience with this population. Implications for the social work curriculum, additional needs assessment, and recruitment are examined.
