The Influence of Readers' Prior Knowledge and Level of Involvement on Ambiguous Text Interpretation: An Extension Study.
Henk, William A.; And Others
Reading Research and Instruction, v32 n3 p1-12 Spr 1993
Assesses prior knowledge and involvement in high school readers whose backgrounds would seem to match the possible interpretations of an ambiguous text. Finds that (1) prior knowledge resulting from actual group membership exerted only a modest effect on interpretation; (2) readers' level of involvement predicted text interpretation reliably; and (3) the research model itself influenced the findings.
