Developmental Expectations for the Self and Most Other People: Age Grading in Three Functions of Social Comparison.
Heckhausen, Jutta; Krueger, Joachim
Developmental Psychology, v29 n3 p539-48 May 1993
Analyzed young, middle-aged, and old adults' ratings of person-descriptive attributes with respect to developmental change throughout adulthood for themselves and other people. Also assessed aspects of subjective identification with age groups. Findings suggested three modes of social comparison: self-assessment, self-enhancement involving favorable expectations for old age, and self-improvement expressed in developmental aspirations. (MM)
