The Schooling of Cultural and Ethnic Subordinate Groups. Essay Review of "Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education," by Sonia Nieto; "Making Choices for Multicultural Education: Five Approaches to Race, Class, and Gender," by Christine Sleeter and Carl Grant; and "Minority Status and Schooling: A Comparative Study of Immigrant and Involuntary Minorities," edited by Margaret Gibson and John Ogbu.
Clark, Sanza B.
Comparative Education Review, v37 n1 p62-68 Feb 1993
Sleeter and Grant outline two assimilationist and three consciousness-raising approaches to multicultural education, whereas Nieto examines underachievement among minority groups. Both books advocate multicultural education promoting social change. Gibson and Ogbu suggest that immigrants are higher achievers than "involuntary" minorities (Natives and African Americans) because of differing views of acculturation and ethnicity. (SV)
