Miscommunication in the Medical Encounter: A Function of Language or Social Role?
Worley, Leticia, and Elder, Catherine
Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, v14 n1 p17-34 1990
Examination of interaction between hospital staff and nonnative speakers of English touches on institutionalized models of interaction and attempts to characterize typical exchanges at various points during patient processing. Results show that communication difficulties can arise both intra- and cross-culturally, primarily from differentiated roles of staff and patients. (37 references) (CP)
