This paper argues for a renewed research effort on the etiology, prevention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect at the neighborhood level, based on evidence that the variance in rates of child maltreatment is accounted for by social class and neighborhood quality. Such research is seen as essential to development of effective child protection strategies. (DB)
