Explored adolescent socialization process by examining relative importance of athletics to social status during junior high school years. Survey of School Climate was completed by 182 students. Students recognized differences between criteria for remembrance and for current popularity. For majority, popularity and recognition were associated with active participation in the life of the school. (NB)
