During the history of U.S. education, enormous changes have occurred in both the design and purpose of school facilities. Presents an overview of seventeenth- through twentieth-century schools. Characteristics of exemplary schools' facilities are identified, and considerations for facilities of the twenty-first century are addressed. (25 references) (MLF)
