Ethnographic Methods in the Development of Census Procedures for Enumerating the Homeless.
Salo, Matt T.; Campanelli, Pamela C.
Urban Anthropology and Studies of Cultural Systems and World Economic Development, v20 n2 p127-40 Sum 1991
Ethnographic methods were integrated with survey procedures in an experimental daytime count of homeless persons in a major city. Ethnographic data proved valuable for choosing sites, designing questionnaires, developing new interview approaches, and interpreting test results. Recommends a wider use of ethnographic insights in developing surveys, especially where target populations are outside the mainstream. (CJS)
