Reinventing "le Peuple" in 1789.
Birn, Raymond
History Teacher, v23 n4 p363-73 Aug 1990
Reviews works of cultural historians of the French Revolution. Analyzes interpretations of what constituted "the people" in three late eighteenth-century sources: Diderot's "Encyclopedie," contemporary political pamphlets, and Louis-Sebastien Mercier's vignettes of Parisian street life. Contends representation of "the people" in these sources has more legitimacy than either Marxist or revisionist portraits. (CH)
