Logit analyses of a survey of 2,077 scientists and engineers validated individual-level variables as an explanation for the tendency to aspire to managerial careers in research and development centers. Growing organizations appear to promote internal mobility and management development, whereas declining firms concerned with eroding technical skills provide technical training. (SK)
