Compared Missouri data for 915 protective custody (PC) inmates and 9,593 non-PC inmates. PCs were found to have more deficient ratings than non-PCs among all social, medical, and psychological variables examined. Some indices (age, sex offenses) followed stereotypical patterns; unexpected findings included longer PC sentence length, and PC overrepresentation among inmates convicted of violent crimes, notably homicide.
