Reexamines Cowgill and Holmes' hypothesis of an inverse relationship between industrialization and status of the aged. Suggests that status of the old throughout history fluctuates between low and high, and concludes that the elderly may receive a somewhat higher status in the postindustrial period. (Author/TE)
