Paradoxical versus Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions: Effects on Perceptions of Counselor Characteristics.
McMillan, Douglas N.; Johnson, Mark E.
Journal of Mental Health Counseling, v12 n1 p67-75 Jan 1990
Studied undergraduate student (N=96) perceptions of counselor characteristics during audiotaped counseling sessions in which counselor used either paradoxical intervention combining symptom prescription and restraining directives or cognitive-behavior directive with a client describing severe anxiety reactions. Found perceptions of counselor using cognitive-behavior intervention higher in expertness, attractiveness and trustworthiness than perceptions of two paradoxical intervention counselors. (Author/CM)
